In order to get married in Canada, just like any other place, you have certain steps you need to follow. Just like the United States, each province in Canada will have their own specific laws they may add to these general laws that will be stated in this article.

To get a marriage license in Canada, you will need to visit the Registry Agent Office. You will need to provide a driver’s license, passport, and a birth certificate. Besides that, you will also need to know the full names including your mother’s maiden name for both parents, and the place of birth for both of them. If you are not a resident of Canada that is not a problem, but both parties must apply at the same time if this is the case. You will need to provide a divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate to prove you are not married at the present time. The option of a covenant marriage is not allowed in Canada, plus they have no waiting period for people either.

Any fees that you may have to pay will vary depending on where you are applying for the marriage certificate, but you will have to pay something. There will be no other tests required, like the blood test that is required in the United States, or the test of sexually transmitted diseases, or even HIV/AIDS. Proxy marriages are not allowed, though in Canada you are allowed to marry your cousin. Common law marriages are also not noticed by the Canadian Government as legal. Plus, Canada does allow same sex marriages.

If you are under 18 and over 16, plus you have a consent form signed by your parents, you can get a license to get married. If you are a male and less than 16 you cannot get married, even if you do have a consent form. It’s just not going to happen. About the only way you will be able to get married under the age of 16 is if you get a note from a doctor that says you are a mother of a child or are pregnant.

You must have two witnesses at your wedding, and they must be over the age of 16. Once you get the license you have 90 days to use it or lose it, and then you have to apply for another one.

Pretty much the laws of Canada aren’t that different from the United States; just remember though, each province does have their own separate rules too. So once you know what province you are planning on getting the license in, read up on what the particular rules are for that location and make sure you can meet them all. Of course, if you don’t meet the requirements you can always try another province to see if what is holding you back in one province will not be a problem in the next province. So good luck on your marriage license and your future marriage!
