Most states have the same rules when it comes to getting that marriage license that you will need in order to have your wedding ceremony. Each state has its own separate laws too, that can either put a damper on your day or not affect it one bit.

Of course most states require that you are both 18, but in some cases you can be 16 and have a parent’s consent. Or you can have a court order in some states if you are younger and want to get married. Most states require some form of blood testing to be done on each applicant. But again not all states feel this is that big of a deal. The states that do, want to check for sexually transmitted diseases or any other problems that may be passed on to a child.

While some states are now making it a requirement for the parties to take a test to see if they have HIV/AIDS, with as many people as this disease has killed it’s no wonder that states are trying to inform both parties before they get married. That way they won’t think of having offspring and the baby being stuck with a disease to which there is no cure at present.

How about the fact that in some states first cousins can actually be married, but with their marriage they need to agree to not have any children together, just in case of birth defects that can affect the child. Really, how do the states where cousins get married ensure that this never happens? You have to wonder if they have a register and send people out to check up on the couple to make sure they haven’t had children. It’s a busy world where most likely the couple is just forgotten, and they can move on and have children just like everyone else. So shouldn’t this option then be outlawed? You would think so, but it’s not really many states that allow this option to take place.

The fact that you need to both be mentally able to understand what you are getting into is a great deal too. You would think that this would mean a much lower divorce rate, but obviously mental ability isn’t really the cause of the divorces in the world. But at least everyone knows up front that both parties in this marriage do know what they are getting into. However, this isn’t always the best thing either, that’s why at times the states have a waiting period that they will put on the marriage license. Which means you may have to wait up to five days to get married after you have applied.

This in itself could fix some of those people who just jump the gun and say, ‘hey, let’s get married this weekend!’ Or heck, all they need to really do is go to a state where there is no waiting period, apply and get a license and get married. Pretty messed up, but that’s life!
