Marriage laws to get your license are different from state to state. Although these rules are different, if you get married in one state another will still recognize the marriage as one bound by law.

Some things you may need in a state may be the following:

Marriage license you have gotten issued by the country clerk of court you will have to pay a fee for.

Most states require that both parties are 18 or older, or a consent signed by a parent.

Shot records to prove vaccinations have been received.

Some states still have a test, both physical and blood, for certain diseases like German measles or some sexually transmitted diseases.

Proof that you are not currently married, divorce decree, death certificate, or annulments.

Both parties must have the mental capacity to know what they are doing.

Both people must be consenting and 18 or over. Cannot be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or mentally ill.

The two people who wish to get married are not related by blood.

In some states first cousins may marry. But they will not be able to conceive any children if they do marry.

Blood test is done for venereal disease.

Also a test must be done for both parties to determine they do not have HIV/AIDS.

Waiting period must be met between the time the license was issued and the ceremony is performed. This time period can range from one to five days. This is given so that if the marriage is possibly being done as a rush, both parties have time to think and decide whether this is what they really want to do.

Marriage ceremony must be performed with a witness and also a person performing the ceremony that is recognized by the state.

Religious ceremony must be done by the customs of that religion.

Civil ceremonies can be conducted by judges. Most states require at least two people who are to witness the marriage. Marriage license must be recorded after the ceremony.

Consummation of your marriage by a form of sexual act, which isn’t required in all of the states.

Some states consider your marriage legal the minute the ceremony is over and the paper is signed by the witnesses.

As stated earlier each state has specific laws. These are just the general marriage laws that most states will ask for you to do before getting married. So if you meet all of these, but live in a different state, you still need to go and make sure that your state doesn’t require something completely different from you.

Marriage is a state that should be entered into with the knowledge that it is to be a life-long binding contract between two people. So before you decide that you want to marry that person you’ve been seeing for a bit, take a step back and ask yourself if it’s really what you want or are you just wishing upon a star. Don’t go into a marriage without much thought.
